Caught By Surprise

On Easter of 2006, I decided to take a trip to Maymont Park in Richmond, VA to take some pictures. It was a beautiful day just to be outside. The flowers in bloom were incredible. Then, I saw something which caused me take a second look. The tree trunks were adorned with Easter dresses, all compliments of the VCU Sophomore Draping class! I took pictures for memory's sake. I never knew the images would come in handy to prove my story that I couldn't help but share.

Then, I made my way to the Japanese gardens to explore. As I was shooting a maple, a lady walked up behind me to ask if I was taking pictures of the bird. I decided to look for the bird instead of answering, "What bird?" While I am not a bird watcher, I knew it was not one I had seen before. It was beautiful. I was excited to get the pictures of it.

It was a fun and memorable day taking pictures. The day really was symbolic of my photographic experience. I did professional photography in my 20's and won quite a few awards around the state of Virginia. But I stopped for some reason. It was not in my plans to even pick it up again. It wasn't even on my radar. Well, last summer the encouragement and support from friends to make jump back into photography just overwhelmed me. I finally picked the camera back up last fall. Opportunities I couldn't imagine kept finding me. I loved and cherished the challenges that have come in the process.

What I have appreciated the most is having the honor to capture the simplest things that memories spring from. For me, that is the true gift of photography. And that is the gift I would like to share with you.

Many blessings to you,

Jillian Chilson
